Although cell phones have not been around for a very long time, they have become a key part of our lives. People use their cell phones for just about everything such as: texting, talking, schedule planning, internet surfing, etc. Sometimes we can even do two or more of these things at the same time. Unfortunately, people are also choosing the wrong time to be using their cell phones: while they are driving. As a society, we have become so focused on how much we can do at one time that we are willing to risk our personal safety as well as the safety of others because we can’t put down our cell phones. When driving, sometimes it is difficult to focus on the road which makes it easy to forget that the roads are shared by everyone and not for your exclusive use. Other drivers on the road take notice of drivers on their cell phones whether they want to or not because of the hazards they create. Erratic driving is something that we all get quite worked up about, especially if it makes us late or is otherwise a direct inconvenience to us. Scott Clark, veteran web business strategist and the owner of the consultancy BuzzMaven Labs, says “[He] came within inches of a bad accident because of a young driver being on the phone and crossing three lanes of traffic at 45 mph.” Drivers are also tailgating you because of, again, the inability to maintain a constant speed because they are on the phone. Clark warns of “[…] the rusty red Camaro [tailgating] the minivan full of kids.” Drivers who use cell phones while driving are also highly dangerous to pedestrians. A young woman killed a pedestrian on a bicycle while she was texting on her phone. She may not have intended to end that person’s life, but she made the poor decision to drive and text which she has to live with for the rest of her life. Any one of us could have been that poor individual on that fateful day. I used to ride my bike everywhere, mostly using the roads in the way that bikes are supposed to. As people become more independent on cell phones, nowadays most people using cell phones while driving. Talking or messaging on a phone while driving is a serious distraction. Using cell phones while driving can lead you to a fatal accident. There are a few reasons that cell phones should be banned while driving (except in emergency) such as, text messaging, talking on the phone and use of electronic gadgets for cell phones. There are many dangers associated with using a cell phone while driving.
Taking eyes off the road while driving is one of the first lessons that is taught to a driver in his early driver’s education. Drivers who talk while driving do not pay attention to road and thus end up in an accident. They put not only their life in danger but other drivers and pedestrians. Text messaging while driving is a bigger danger than talking on a phone while driving. While texting, the drivers have to completely divert their attention from road to their cell phone and their hands from the steering wheel to the cell phone.
Most of the drivers falling in this category are young drivers. According to state of Utah, “if a driver involve is found in an accident to be using cell phone, he has to spend 15 years in prison. ” In addition, cell phones gadgets are used along with cell phones the huge distraction while driving. Using of such electronic gadgets associated with cell phones like hands free, car charger etc. completely divert drivers’ attention from the road to their cell phones.
Hands free devices are used to avoid accidents, but recent studies shows it is in the leading cause of accidents while cell phone car chargers force the driver to take both of his hands off the steering wheel to car charger and cell phone and thus loses control of vehicle and putting life in danger. Some people believe that using cell phone should not be banned while driving (except in emergency) because you never know when you might get an emergency call. However, using cell phone to attend to an important phone call can also make one panic and can put you in to an emergency.
It’s better to arrive late rather than not arriving to that emergency call. There is nothing more important than your precious life as compared to an emergency call. In conclusion, cell phones should be banned while driving including text messaging, talking on the phone and use of electronic gadgets for cell phones. The consequences include the dangerous effect on health, financial stresses and injuries. Cell phones should be banned ( except in emergency) while driving my personal suggestion would be that car manufacturing companies should install a cell phone signal jammer to avoid a serious accident in future.
